Do I need a Functional Capacity Assessment?

A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is a thorough assessment of your child’s abilities and needs across various aspects of everyday life.

A comprehensive report is prepared with recommendations on supports and services that would be appropriate for your child.

They can be useful for providing information for NDIS plan review meetings.

How much do they cost?

In Perth you can expect to pay around $2,000 for a Functional Capacity Assessment and report.

Providers typically allocate 10-15 hours to completing an FCA, so this cost is based on the NDIA price guide rate x number of hours of work.  For example, an occupational therapist can charge up to $193 per hour under the NDIA price guide.  If the FCA takes 10 hours to complete then it will equal $1,930.

Who completes the FCA?

A paediatric FCA is most often completed by an occupational therapist but can be completed by other therapists.

Should I get an FCA before my NDIS planning meeting?

It is not necessary to pay privately for an FCA ahead of your NDIS planning meeting.  You may already have a number of reports that can be used in planning for services for your child.  You can ask to include funding towards a FCA in your plan so that you can get advice on your child’s functional capacity and recommendations on services.  This can be used at your next review.
